Antrittsvorlesung Prof. Dr. Annaliese Mason: Making new crop species

Dies academicus
Referent/in: Prof. Dr. Annaliese Mason (Plant Breeding)

Very often in nature two or more species come together (hybridise) to make a new species which contains genetic material from both parents. This process is widespread in nature, where it is proposed to confer several major benefits to new species formed in this way, including greater environmental tolerances and vigor. Many important crop species also result from this process, including wheat, rapeseed, cotton, sugarcane and coffee. Our research group proposes to utilise this process by which new species form in order to create new crop types in the Brassica genus, which contains crops such as cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, turnip, mustards, swede and rapeseed. So far, we have made several new hybrid types which we think may provide a promising basis for the development of vigorous, environmentally tolerant Brassica crops.
