Proteostasis vs. amino acid homeostasis – How plants manage their resources during progressive drought stress

During progressive drought stress cellular proteostasis on the one hand and amino acid homeostasis on the other hand are severely challenged, since the decrease in photosynthesis induces massive proteolysis leading to drastic changes in both, the proteome and the free amino acid pool.In addition to bulk digestive proteolysis also selective degradation systems are involved, which preserve cellular functions essential for stress response such as mitochondrial respiration, lipid, protein and amino acid catabolism. Quantitative proteomics reveals that a limited number of very high abundant proteins contribute the main fraction of amino acids to the free pool. Specific amino acids accumulate as compatible osmolytes or precursors for secondary metabolism whereas others serve as alternative respiratory substrates to compensate for the lack of carbohydrates derived from photosynthesis.
