DESCRIPTION:Iron is an essential microelement because numerous metabolic p
rocesses and electron transfer reactions rely on heme-and iron-sulfur (Fe-
 S)-containing proteins. In particular\, a high demand on Fe-S clusters/pro
teins exists in chloroplasts and mitochondria. Photosynthetic organisms po
ssess a specific protein machinery in each organelle for Fe-S cluster biog
enesis. This requires a de novo assembly step followed by the transfer of
the preformed Fe-S cluster to client proteins using a set of ‘late-actin
g’ maturation factors. In the latter category\, Arabidopsis thaliana and
Chlamydomonas reinhardtiipossesses respectively five and three genes enco
ding NFU proteins which are localized in plastids or in mitochondria. In r
ecent years\, we have combined molecular and physiological studies of A. t
haliana insertion mutants to the biochemical and spectroscopic characteriz
ation of recombinant proteins to delineate the partners and functions of t
 hese maturation factors.
