Li received the faculty prize for the best thesis in plant science for her work on the root angle gene EGT2 in barley, which was published in New Phytologist. In addition Li received the Chinese government award for outstanding self-financed students abroad for her PhD work. This award is the highest award granted by the Chinese government to Chinese students overseas. Every year, 650 doctoral students, chosen from different disciplines, are recognized for their outstanding academic achievements or great research potential during overseas, thus making this award highly competitive.
