Wiesengut's experimental farm is gearing up for a quick start, with shoots of green already carpeting the fields. Alongside the return of the crops comes the waves of insects, small mammals, and countless birds - transforming the fields from their winter dormancy into a lively summer hub.
The groups efforts have been refreshed and refocused, with team members conducting field experiments and establishing protocols for a season of rigorous data collection. Whether it be with wildlife cameras, in situ bird observation, or the passive acoustic monitoring - the capture of motion and life in the agroecosystem environment is well underway. Weather and conditions permitting, there will even be drones in the sky!
To help facilitate specialty needs that accompany the team's novel methods, the recently acquired a 3-D printer enables the creation of customized recording elements. This will empower an already impressive host of monitoring devices, aiding significantly in creating a special collection of data.
